Can the Souls in Purgatory Appear to the Living?

Understanding the teaching

1. What is Purgatory?

Purgatory is not a second chance after death and it is not a lesser form of Hell. It is the final purification of those who die in God's friendship but are not yet fully prepared for the vision of God.

“It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (cf. 2 Maccabees 12:45-46).
2. Can the dead ask for prayer?

Saints, mystics and ordinary believers have sometimes reported experiences they understood as encounters with souls undergoing purification.

The Church approaches private revelations cautiously. Catholics are not required to accept every such story as authentic.

One message, however, appears repeatedly: remember the dead in prayer.

3. The story associated with Padre Pio

One well-known account associated with St Padre Pio concerns a deceased friar who allegedly asked him for spiritual assistance because of negligence committed during his earthly life.

Padre Pio is said to have promised to offer Mass for him.

Did you know?

A small collection in the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Suffragio in Rome contains objects traditionally associated with accounts concerning souls in Purgatory. Catholic doctrine does not depend upon these objects.

4. How can we help the dead?
  • offer Holy Mass,
  • pray the Rosary,
  • pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy,
  • offer an indulgence,
  • fast or make a sacrifice,
  • remember them in ordinary personal prayer.
