James was the son of Joseph and Mary, though according to Catholic and Orthodox traditions, he was Jesus’ stepbrother—Joseph’s son from a previous marriage. The Gospels mention Jesus’ brothers, including James, Jude, Joseph, and Simon. Modern scholarship and traditions suggest James might also have been Jesus’ cousin, confirming his close family ties.
From a young age, James distinguished himself by his piety. When Jesus began his public ministry, James initially doubted his messianic role. It was only after the Resurrection that he became a fervent believer and one of the Church’s pillars.
After Jesus’ Ascension, James was chosen as the bishop of the Church in Jerusalem, which was the center of Christianity at the time. His wisdom and righteousness earned him the title “the Just.” The Church regarded him as a moral and spiritual authority. He presided over the famous Jerusalem Council that decided on the mission of Christianity to the Gentiles.
James was known for strict self-discipline—he spent long hours in prayer until his knees became hard as stone. His moderation and humility set an example for all believers. Despite his severity, he was a man of great love and forgiveness.
One of the most important legacies of James is the Epistle bearing his name in the New Testament. This letter contains practical advice on Christian living, emphasizing that faith without works is dead. James calls for social justice, humility, and perseverance in faith, reflecting his own life and teachings.
In 62 AD, James faced the Jewish court accused of blasphemy. Instead of recanting, he publicly professed his faith in Christ, quoting Jesus’ words from the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” He was stoned to death, and his martyrdom strengthened the faith of many early Christians.
Legend has it that James prayed so intensely every day that his knees became hard as stone. Other accounts describe him as a just man who reconciled divided parties and served as a spiritual guide to the entire community.
