Is Carlo Acutis the First Saint Influencer?

Carlo was a typical teenager in many ways. He loved soccer, wore his favorite Nike sneakers, and had a passion for programming and computers. Yet his true calling was to proclaim the Gospel and deepen love for the Eucharist. Seeing how the internet often spread rumors and falsehoods, Carlo created a multilingual website mapping Eucharistic miracles worldwide. This project, born in his bedroom, became a resource for catechists and faithful on every continent.

His life motto was: “The Eucharist is my highway to heaven.” This reminds us how central the Eucharist is in Christian life — through the Body and Blood of Christ, we receive grace to be transformed and drawn closer to God. Carlo often said that the more we receive the Eucharist, the more we become like Jesus, tasting a foretaste of heaven here on earth.

Diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia at age 15, Carlo offered his suffering for the Church and the Pope, telling his mother, “I am happy to die because I have lived my life without wasting a single minute on things that do not please God.” His witness echoes the biblical call to holiness, which is not reserved for clergy or religious, but for every believer: “Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16).

Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati will be canonized together on September 7, 2025, at St. Peter’s Square. This pairing highlights two very different but equally inspiring ways to live the Gospel — Pier Giorgio through charity and mountain climbing, Carlo through digital evangelization.

The Bible does not condemn technology itself. Tools and inventions can be used for good or evil, depending on how we use them. Carlo understood that the internet need not be a place of confusion and falsehood but can be a “highway to heaven” if it serves to spread God’s truth and love. His life inspires us to use our talents and modern means to serve God and neighbor.

In times when the digital world often distracts us from God, Carlo’s example invites us to a digital conversion. His online library of Eucharistic miracles is a model of how technology can support faith. New Catholic apps, like Truthly, bring this vision to life by offering reliable answers and daily spiritual guidance at our fingertips.

Carlo’s example shows that holiness is not separate from everyday life or our passions. God calls each of us to holiness right where we are — even in the world of new technologies. May Blessed Carlo Acutis be a model for us all: a true “influencer of God” in the 21st century.
